A Tragedy at Midnight (1942)

tragedy-at-midnightGreg and Beth Sherman are a B-movie Nick and Nora Charles. He’s the suave host of a radio show that ridicules the police by solving their unsolved crimes. She’s his wisecracking wife and a writer of detective stories. Annoyed, the police snoop around for anything they can find to discredit Sherman, so they’re thrilled when it looks like he’s connected to a sudden murder. He’s innocent though, and he and the wife zip around the city to solve the case, dodging the law and wisecracking just like William Powell and Myrna Loy along the way. This isn’t as good as The Thin Man movies, but there are some chuckles here and there. Most of the funny stuff comes from Margaret Lindsay, who seriously approaches Carole Lombard levels of inspiration as the kooky Beth Sherman.

Only 53 minutes long. A snappy little product of the Republic Pictures B-movie factory.
