At the Earth’s Core (1976)

at-the-earths-core-1I rented this mostly for Caroline Munro’s cleavage. If you see enough Hammer movies, you get to know it well. It’s like an old friend. At the Earth’s Core is a simple science fiction movie made for kids. Peter Cushing and Doug McClure are Victorian-era scientists who build a giant drill for exploring far beneath the Earth. They ride it down to the Earth’s core and find themselves in a pink sky’d jungle world where rubber suit monsters wreak havoc and the English speaking humanoid people are enslaved by pig-faced barbarians who take orders telepathically from their shrieking, winged Pterodactyl-like rulers. Yeah, it’s an old story, but this time it has Peter Cushing acting like Mr. Magoo. I enjoyed this a lot. It’s good and fast-paced. It’s from 1976, but so innocent and cheap-looking that it’s hard to believe that Star Wars was right around the corner.
