Behind Green Lights (1946)

Half-decent, not terrible, pretty okay 20th Century Fox B-movie. It’s worse than a nice back rub, but better than stale potato chips. There’s another unsolved murder in the city and another long night ahead for a harried police detective (William Gargan). What it lacks in personality, it makes up for with a swift pace over a mere sixty-four minutes and a thankfully light touch with the comic relief. Also, the scenes in the press room in which reporters duel with each other over scoops and shout into telephones are nicely reminiscent of His Girl Friday (it looks like it’s shot on the exact same set even). Carole Landis, who usually appeared in comedies, plays the girl who looks so guilty of the murder that we all know she’s innocent. Look for John Ireland in an early role as one of the cops.
