Buchanan Rides Alone (1958)

buchanan-rides-aloneAnother crackerjack western starring Randolph Scott and directed by Budd Boetticher. In this one, Scott is wrongly accused of murder when he passes through a corrupt California border town. The bad guys here are some evil fucks, especially fat, bullfrog-esque Barry Kelley as a sheriff who’s worse than most outlaws. Meanwhile, Randolph Scott plays one of his most pleasant characters in a Boetticher film. He’s a tough guy, but all smiles when someone isn’t trying to cross him. He even gets to be funny in one scene.

It’s the best of the two Budd Boetticher and Randolph Scott films not written by Burt Kennedy. Charles Lang, who also wrote Decision at Sundown, came up with this one.
