Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers. They’re in the New York City sewer system and they like to pop up out of manholes and eat people. City Hall and the government deny there’s a problem because they’re the ones who created the monsters thanks to the toxic waste they store in the sewers. This means it’s up to the Chief of Police and some slob who runs a soup kitchen for the homeless, along with a photographer known for snapping pics of hobos, to save the city.
Clumsily directed monster flick. The first half is talky, but the action and gore pick up in the second half. It’s a cult movie for its nice New York City atmosphere on a low budget and for its cast of cult favorite actors like John Heard and Daniel Stern (and with a young John Goodman showing up for about two minutes as an asshole cop). Also it’s fun to say the word C.H.U.D.
