Corpses (2004)

This whole decade gave us more zombie movies than we’ve ever gotten in film history. If you’re sick of ’em, I’m with you. Do find room in your heart for this one though, a terrific zombie comedy from writer/director Rolfe Kanefsky (who made the classic There’s Nothing Out There). It’s about this crazy mortician (a great Robert Donovan) who’s concocted a glowing green serum that makes the dead come back to life as rampaging flesh eaters. HOWEVER, his method only works for an hour and the zombies understand this, which means that they do whatever he says so they can get more injections and stay alive. Our mortician, meanwhile, has some financial problems and a horrible ex-wife who really needs a bite to the neck, and he uses his zombie crew to help him out with this. The other great performance here is from the subtly funny Jeff Fahey as the stern police captain (and fiancee of the mortician’s ex) who eventually becomes a zombie killer extraordinaire when he’s needed. Let’s also mention Tiffany Shepis, who’s Jeff Fahey’s horny daughter and who looks great stripped down to her bra.

Lots of entrails-ripping gore here, along with plenty of clever jokes, and a pretty zombie girl for whom Rolfe Kanefsky always seems to come up with good reasons to get naked. I’ll take it.

Good late night viewing here, for the B-movie inclined.
