Darkman III: Die Darkman Die (1996)

Darkman is a scientist superhero with one mission: Find a way to improve his formula for synthetic skin grafts. That was his goal even before gangsters dunked him in acid in the first movie and made his face look like something that was sent back to the kitchen in an Italian restaurant. The whole experience also fried his brain enough to turn him into a brooding vigilante of the crime-ridden city. He steals from criminals to fund his (now underground) research. And those criminals tend to want him dead in return.

Sounds like an action movie to me, one that can be rehashed over and over again.

Here’s the third and last part of the rehash series. It’s the same thing, except this time the bad guy is the reliably bonkers Jeff Fahey as another suit-and-tie gangster who’s rotten to the core. The twist is that Fahey also wants to get hold of Darkman’s scientific notes (which the Dark One very intelligently keeps on one single floppy disk, no back-up whatsoever) for nefarious purposes. Plenty of explosions, chase scenes and dead henchmen follow, along with a memorable decapitation.

This is better than Part II. It’s more snappy and Darkman gets more psychotic moments that are reminiscent of the first movie.

Fun fact: this was originally supposed to be Darkman II, but the gurus at Universal Studios decided to instead put this out in the video stores as Part III (both parts were filmed at about the same time). WHY? I have no idea. Maybe it was a clerical error.
