Dawn of the Dead (1978)

dawn-of-the-deadThe zombie apocalypse is nigh in this great sequel to 1968’s Night of the Living Dead. Depending on my mood, this might be even better than its predecessor. Here, George Romero takes the next step in his zombie takeover scenario by showing us a society that unravels and slides into chaos as the dead just won’t stop rising and trying to eat everybody. It’s an “end of the world” movie, an apocalypse movie, but with zombies rather than missiles or meteors. Four people seek safety in a giant shopping mall, in which they actually manage to live comfortably while the undead meander in the parking lot. Then a leather jacket biker gang crashes the party.

Make-up man Tom Savini not only comes up with lots of terrific splatter, exploding heads, and intestine-ripping gross-outs, but he also plays one of the bikers AND is one of the two credited stuntmen.
