Deadly Dreams (1988)

It’s got the creepiest mask of 1980s horror movies. A psycho with a hollowed-out wolf skin over his face taunts a college kid by showing up randomly throughout his day and scaring the living fuck out of him. You see, our college boy saw his parents get shot to death about ten years ago, but rather than grow up to be Batman, he instead becomes a true blue neurotic. He’s all jitters and bad dreams. Also, nobody else ever sees the wolf face man, so all of his friends just think he’s crazy. We’re not convinced that he isn’t crazy, either. Director Kristine Peterson likes to keep us unsure about what we’re seeing by going hog wild with dream sequences. Anytime people have been talking too much and the movie needs a kick in the ass, Peterson has a major character get stabbed in the face or shot—and then it all turns out to be a dream. Peterson does this over and over again until we’re sick of it, but some clever plot twists help ease the pain. It all builds up to a pretty good ending. This isn’t a great movie, but it’ll do if you’re digging deep into the VHS vault.
