Dirty Mary Crazy Larry (1974)

Pretty good 70s car chase trash that brings the beautiful muscle cars and sun-beaten rural highways that we’ve come to expect. Peter Fonda’s Larry is, indeed, pretty crazy. He’s just committed a clever robbery of a small town supermarket safe and now Vic Morrow leads the police in frantic pursuit. Larry is your regular anti-hero of the time, a little hard-boiled and not too likable on paper, though Fonda’s presence in the role gives him a whiff of counterculture cool. Then we’ve got Dirty Mary, who’s plenty dirty, I guess. At the very least, she reminds me of every girlfriend I’ve ever fleetingly wanted to push out of a moving car. She didn’t help with the theft, but she winds up alongside Fonda anyway, annoying the piss out of him. English actress Susan George does a convincing hayseed act for the role and steals the movie. It was a big drive-in hit in its day.
