Grim Prairie Tales (1990)

When it comes to horror anthology films, it’s sometimes the wraparound story that makes it. The four segments here are decent takes on shaggy dog chillers and are welcome doses of western horror (a neglected genre in movies), but the good stuff here is the running banter between James Earl Jones and Brad Dourif, both strong actors. They’re two Old West desert travelers who cross paths and decide to share a campfire for the night, eventually telling each other stories and then critiquing them afterward. Jones is a bounty hunter and a convincing badass even in a bad wig, his voice Darth Vader deep and his manner ornery as a lizard. Meanwhile, Dourif is the milquetoast, but there’s something about him that we never trust because… well, he’s Brad Dourif. There’s always something wrong with that guy, something weird behind his eyes. The best story here is the one where Marc “Jimmy Olsen” McClure has a very unique fatal attraction out among the tumbleweeds.
