Half a Sinner (1940)

Low-budget fluff from Universal that’s got brains like I’ve got menstrual cramps (note: I do not get menstrual cramps). This is one of those 1940s B-movies that gives you crime with a heaping side of comic relief. It’s so cute you could plotz. How does a repressed young schoolteacher with dreams of a more wild life end up on the road in a stolen car with a dead body in the back seat? The screenwriters can’t come up with a good reason, but they go with it anyway. They kill this film’s fifty-nine minutes and they kill it dead. It’s watchable if you’re up for some nonsense. Also, one of the interesting things about old B-movies is that you sometimes catch familiar names in the credits, names who’d go on to later prestige. The “original story” credit on this little dust mite goes to Dalton Trumbo!
