Highway to Hell (1991)

Sweet, innocent Kristy Swanson gets kidnapped by a demonic cop and yanked into Hell. Her wimp-tastic boyfriend Chad Lowe goes after her in a souped-up 1940 Ford Coupe loaned to him by Richard Farnsworth. Turns out Hell looks a lot like Arizona. There are biker gangs, roadside diners and lots and lots of perfectly moussed hair. A pre-fame Ben Stiller is there. So is Jerry Stiller. So is Lita Ford. So is Lita Ford’s cleavage. The only thing dumber than the jokes here are the serious scenes. This thing shifts gears a lot, from comedy to action. Somewhere along the way it slips a rod and it charges downhill, but at least it does it fast. It’s pure camp with a few surprisingly good special effects. Released to theaters for about eight minutes in 1991, been stuck in VHS Land (no DVD) ever since. The low point: the cute kid. The high point: Gilbert Gottfried’s touching, sensitive portrayal of Adolf Hitler.
