Maniac Cop (1988)

The cop is a maniac and so are creators William Lustig and Larry Cohen in this memorable slasher flick. As usual with them, everything in this movie is off its rocker and out to lunch. You can’t trust them to make much sense. You also can’t trust the characters to behave like normal people. However, you can trust Lustig and Cohen to deliver a trashy good time with solid carnage. How exactly did deceased headcase policeman Robert Z’Dar come back to life as a bulletproof zombie who likes to stab random people in the streets? Lustig and Cohen give us as much explanation we need, which is no explanation. They just wind him up and set him loose. It helps that the good guys are Bruce Campbell and Tom Atkins, two actors whom we’ve seen in enough oddball movies that we’ll believe any crazy thing that they say. The terrific cast of cult movie stalwarts also includes Richard Roundtree as the police commissioner who isn’t buying any of this shit, pock-marked police captain William Smith and one-time movie barbarian girl (in Hundra) Laurene Landon as a lady vice cop who manages to look tough even after going crazy with a hair crimper.
