One of the great bizarros of 1980s horror films and a campy classic of the “stay the fuck away from small southern towns” subgenre. Right in the middle of a rural nowhere, motel proprietor and smoked meat peddler Farmer Vincent (old western star Rory Calhoun) is turning out some of the best sausage anyone ever tasted. Do I even have to tell you that it’s because he’s really using human meat? Of course not. The twist here is that he keeps his human livestock in a ghastly hidden “garden” way out behind the motel. He buries people up to their neck, slashes their vocal chords so all they can do is make unnerving gurgling noises, and feeds them through a funnel to fatten them up for the butcher block. Tempering the sickness here is that it’s all actually played for laughs. Still, if you’re considering going vegetarian, this might push you over the edge.
Look for future Cheers star John Ratzenberger as the member of an ill-fated touring punk band called Ivan & the Terribles.
