Nightmare Castle (1965)

The endlessly watchable Barbara Steele’s dual role as a frosty brunette aristocrat and her crazy blonde twin is the easy highlight of this so-so story of greed, ghosts and murder in stately gothic drawing rooms. The brunette is tortured to death by her mad scientist husband for cheating on him with one of the castle grunt workers. She’s the rich one in the marriage though, and just before he snuffs her candle, she reveals that she wrote him out of her will long ago in favor of her bee-brained sibling. Our doctor though is a quick thinker who then proceeds to court the sister. He brings the blonde Barbara to the castle and puts on his act while she begins to see visions that are either the vengeful ghosts of the recently deceased or just more proof that she could use a good checkup from the neck up. It builds up to a terrific climax full of darkness, curtains blown about and glowering faces, but it takes a path to get there that sometimes stumbles into melodrama territory while working its way through the shadows. See it for Ms. Steele and her mesmerizing eyes.
