You’re not gonna believe how DUMB voluptuous bombshell Cleo Moore is in this one. Her character is right up there with Tom Neal in Detour as one of the classic idiots in film noir. Here, she’s a hapless waitress who steals $25,000 from her crooked employer, hides the money, and then gladly turns herself in to the police. When she gets out of jail, she intends to dig up the stolen cash and start a new life. Things don’t work out as planned though, mostly due to a few plot twists that largely depend on Cleo Moore having potato salad for brains.
Still, it moves along at a snappy pace and has a nice, seedy atmosphere. Cleo Moore’s tight sweaters don’t hurt, either.
This is written, produced and directed by portly Czech character-actor Hugo Haas (who also takes an acting role here). An unsung auteur, Haas spent the 1950s pounding out low-budget crime movies like this, independently produced and mostly starring Cleo Moore.
