Prom Night (1980)

Disco dancin’ and throat slashin’ at the prom. Our mad killer here has a ski mask, an ax, and a major grudge over a little girl’s accidental death from years ago. The kids who caused it are now sex-crazed high school students and ready to get their heads chopped off. Jamie Lee Curtis is, of course, the nice girl who has no idea about any of the seedy stuff that’s happening until her boyfriend becomes a target. It all adds up to an entertaining teen meat screamer straight out of the early 80s slasher film boom. There’s about an hour of high school relationship drama before the blood flies, but Paul Lynch’s breezy direction gets you through it.

This was a decent drive-in hit in its day that cemented Jamie Lee Curtis’s scream queen status after Halloween. Filmed in Canada. Look for actor Robert Silverman—a frequent face in David Cronenberg films—as the creepy high school janitor who leers at the girls.
