Run, Angel, Run! (1969)

Another guy crosses another motorcycle gang and then hits the road for dear life. This time it’s the delightfully unlikable William Smith as a former member of the hell-raisers in The Devil’s Advocates. He sung like a canary to the press about the gang’s shady dealings and now all of his ex-friends want his head, his blood, his ass and whatever else he’s got as payback. The best scene is the one in the empty train car where Smith has to knock around a few stowaway sleazebags who try to rape his Bobbie Gentry-lookalike girl (Valerie Starrett), but the whole film moves at a solid sprint. Like a lot of biker movies, it’s got a pretty good soundtrack (main titles song performed by Tammy Wynette), groovy old 60s lingo by the ton and plenty of high-octane unleaded cynicism. This is the first directing credit for longtime character-actor Jack Starrett, who had a brief, but pretty good run helming tight little drive-in movies.
