The Atomic Submarine (1959)

The skies in 1950s movies were crowded enough with UFOs so the aliens here dwell in the ocean, specifically at the North Pole, due to magnetic sci-fi malarky reasons. They also sink approaching ships and submarines. The US government sends in the Navy to find out what’s happening and then trouble starts. The majority of this movie are guys in small rooms talking about science. Busy serial director Spencer Gordon Bennet doesn’t get much chance to stage action scenes. Obviously, the producers are saving their money for the climax, you might think—and then it’s just a black space and an alien that looks like something from Sesame Street. In the end, like the majority of watchable 1950s sci-fi flicks, this is most interesting for its Cold War politics. Among the military stalwarts in the crew is a brash young pacifist who gets to speak his mind, even if nobody’s listening.
