The Beach Girls (1982)

Three cute college girls get to stay in a fancy beach house and they bring along with them every cliche in 80s summer sex comedies.

Do they throw a wild party? Why, yes they do.

Is one of the girls shy and reserved? Why, yes she is.

Are her two friends total party gals who lose their clothes more often than I lose my cellphone? Why, yes they are.

Does the shy girl learn to come out her shell as the movie goes on? I don’t think it’s a spoiler to say that she does.

Also, is there a skinny dipping scene? How about a dog who runs around the beach pulling off girls’ bikini tops? Are there neighbors and maybe a groundskeeper who comically spy on the fleshy fun going on in the house? Is there a crabby adult who wants to put a stop to it? Yes, yes, yes and yes.

This is the kind of movie where someone makes the ancient “Is that a (fill in the blank) in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?” joke.

What I’m trying to say is that this is a story with a message, which is that if you’re a pretty girl with nice, full breasts, it can be liberating and even life-changing to take off your top at a naked pot party by the beach. I couldn’t agree more. I think it’s a life lesson that more people need to hear.

Our three leads make it work. They’re all in on the goof. Debra Blee is Sarah the shy girl and she has a likable, big-eyed Jessica Harper-like quality. Val Kline is the boy-crazy blonde who always pulls the pizza delivery guy into the party and thinks that there’s no problem that can’t be solved by taking off her shirt. Jeana Tomasina is the brunette who says things like “I don’t know how anyone gets seasick. The ocean’s so romantic–up and down, up and down…”.

Let’s also note the brief apperance by Corinne Bohrer, one of my personal favorite 80s movie babes, in her first feature. She’s in just one scene, but it’s probably the movie’s dumbest joke. It’s great.

Directed by Pat Townsend, who took time away from playing guitar in The Who to hang out with the beach girls. I don’t blame him.
