The Mystery Man (1935)

the-mystery-man-1935Little B-movie blip with Robert Armstrong as the classic 1930s fast-living, fast-drinking reporter. He goes to St. Louis after he’s fired from his Chicago newspaper. There, he romances doll-faced Maxine Doyle and lands another job by pursuing the story on a mysterious local gangster called The Eel. Armstrong gets a little too close to the flame though and winds up accused of The Eel’s crimes.

It’s a 62-minute quickie from Monogram Pictures, too low-budget to even have a music score beyond the opening and closing titles. The first half is basically a romantic comedy and then the second half rushes through the crime story.
