The Book of Life (2014)

Gorgeous animated kiddie stuff so busy with visual detail that it feels like you need more than two eyes to take it all in. The story brings all of the old-fashioned adventure, romance, positive messages and happily ever afters that win over the Saturday matinee family crowd. It’s done with a lot of charm, but what makes this film stand out is director Jorge Gutierrez’s intensity for getting Mexican folklore and Day of the Dead imagery on screen. He’s from Mexico City and is clearly no tourist to this stuff. His frames explode with skulls, spangles and day-glo authenticity. Okay, so some of the main voiceover cast are about as Mexican as clam chowder (Christina Applegate, Channing Tatum, Ice Cube) and the unremarkable songs aren’t helped by the cast’s takes on the likes of Radiohead’s “Creep”, Mumford and Sons’ “I Will Wait” and Rod Stewart’s “Da’ Ya Think I’m Sexy?”, no matter how tongue-in-cheek, but the vision here is big enough that it steamrolls over most of the wrinkles.
